The Ecotarium’s 323 acres of forestland in Rutland, MA includes a 7 acre wholly owned pond. The property was gifted to the current owner in 1950 and became the Daniels Forestry Camp, educating students in the practical and theoretical foundations of forestry and environmental work. The camp continued until the mid 1960’s when several buildings were constructed to support the education programs. 15 of those buildings remain, in poor condition. In 1981 a conservation restriction was sold over the property to the state that prohibits any new residential development, but it does allow for the renovation, repair and replacement of the existing buildings and the infrastructure that supports it. There are wonderful trails throughout the property and it abuts thousands of acres of conserved land. The forest is a mix of White Pine, Red Oak, Maples and Birches that has been managed by professional foresters since the 1980’s.
